The Sanctity of Sleep
At Onethird, we believe that sleep is a fundamental human right and a private sanctuary. Our mission is to optimize sleep through technology without ever intruding upon the person. We measure the environment to empower the individual, not to monitor the user.
Privacy by Design & Data Sovereignty
We do not treat privacy as a feature, but as a prerequisite.
Local-First Intelligence: We commit to on-device processing via the SERA model whenever technically feasible. Your most intimate data should never leave the four walls of your bedroom.
The Right to Anonymity: We believe you should not have to trade your identity for better sleep. We will always provide pathways to use our products anonymously.
Non-Exploitation: Onethird will never sell, lease, or trade identifiable user data. We are in the business of sleep science, not the business of data brokerage.
Ethical AI and the SERA Model
Our algorithms are designed to serve the user, not to manipulate them.
Scientific Integrity: The insights provided by SERA must be grounded in physiological data and sleep science. We do not "game" sleep scores to create addictive app loops.
Bias Mitigation: We recognise that body types, ages, and conditions vary. We proactively audit our algorithms to ensure SOMA performs equitably for all users, regardless of sex, weight, or physical ability.
Transparency: We will be "radically transparent" about what our sensors see. If a sensor collects temperature, we will not use it to surreptitiously infer data we haven't disclosed.
The "Sleep, Not Medicine" Boundary
While SOMA provides high-fidelity insights, we maintain a clear ethical line regarding health:
Honest Limitations: We will never claim SOMA is a medical device or a substitute for professional clinical diagnosis without passing respective clinical trials and regulatory approvals.
Proactive Protection: If our data suggests a severe irregularity that could indicate a health risk, we will encourage the user to seek professional medical advice rather than providing a self-diagnosis.
Transparency and Explicit Consent
No Hidden Gates: We will not hide data-sharing toggles behind "dark patterns" or complex menus. "No" means "No."
Plain Language: Our privacy updates and terms will be written for humans, not just lawyers. Every user should understand exactly what happens when they click "Agree."
Opt-In Culture: Marketing, research participation, and third-party integrations will always be strictly opt-in.
Accountability and Australian Values
As a Melbourne-based company, we uphold the highest standards of the Australian Consumer Law and the Privacy Act.
Responsibility: If we make a mistake—whether a data slip or a hardware flaw—we will own it, communicate it immediately, and fix it.
Community Benefit: We aim for SOMA to contribute to the broader understanding of human sleep. Any data used for "the greater good" of sleep research will be strictly aggregated and anonymized to the point of non-reidentification.
